Throughout his life, he made almost 500 projects including international theatre productions, music, and films as well as as Broadway shows. While holding the position of chairman for 19 seasons, he oversaw 12 finishes in the Premier League.

In 1978, he married actress Anouska Hempel, with whom he got divorced in 1980. Since 1994, he has been in a long-term relationship with Jenny Seagrove until his death in 2023.
