The UGC-NET examination was conducted on June 18 for the first half of the 2024 cycle. However, to everyone’s surprise, it was found that the paper was leaked, and the examination was canceled.
After a thorough investigation, it was found that the leaked question papers were sold on encrypted social media platforms. According to various reports, the paper was leaked widely on Telegram.
News18 reported that the exam paper of UGC-NET June 2024 was being sold to students and aspiring candidates for between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000.
Thus, when it came to light, the Ministry of Home Affairs’ I4C carried out a routine input by triggering the cancellation of the UGC-NET June 2024 cycle after the initial details of the analysis.
Inputs from the Home Ministry revealed that the integrity of the examination was compromised. Moreover, the exam paper was also circulated before the conduct of the test on Telegram.
Reports by Business Today revealed that “Telegram was the epicenter of the leak.” Many groups were created on Telegram, and advertisements were also made to maximize profits.
Twitter is currently flooded with screenshots of payments, chats, and Telegram groups.
Actions Taken
Telegram, the social media platform, has responded that it has blocked several channels where the circulation of the leaked UGC-NET (University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test) paper was done. Thus, the competitive exam was forcibly canceled.
NTA conducts UGC-NET twice every year to select candidates for the positions of PhD scholars, assistant professors, and junior research fellows. This year, in 2024, it was conducted in two shifts on June 18 across the country.
The next day, the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) told UGC that the leaked paper was also available on the darknet.
Notably, the CBI registered an FIR against certain unidentified people for their alleged involvement in the UGC-NET paper leak case on June 20, as per the information from the Ministry of Education.
