Ryan Joseph Fitzpatrick is a former U.S. football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 17 seasons. He played for nine different teams as a quarterback during his long and illustrious career. He was picked up by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He served with the Buffalo Bills for the longest stint (four seasons) and his only winning seasons were with New York Jets in 2015 and the Miami Dolphins in 2020. He also holds the unique distinction of being the first NFL quarterback to throw for over 400 yards in three consecutive games, during his stint with Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018.

His inconsistent performance led him to be nicknamed “FitzMagic”, “FitzTragic”, and “Fitz Caption”. This was because of his tendency to throw costly interceptions in crucial games. He also has to his name the dubious distinction of having the most passing yards and passing touchdowns NFL quarterbacks without a postseason appearance.

His career started in college when he was pursuing Economics at Harvard University and opened his stint with Crimson during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, working as the backup for Neil Rose. He had a record in 2002 of 1,155 passing yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, 523 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

He completed his college studies and graduated in 2003 when took up a starting job and finished his junior campaign with 1,770 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in seven games. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and winner of the George H. “Bulger” Lowe Award in 2004.

Ryan Fitzpatrick’s NFL Journey

Ryan Fitzpatrick was selected by St. Louis Rams in the seventh round (250th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft and on July 18, 2005, the Rams signed Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $953,000 contract. He strived for the roster spot against Jeff Smoker to be the Rams’ third-string quarterback but was placed as the third-string quarterback on the depth chart by Head Coach Mike.

His professional regular season debut started in earnest on November 27, 2005 when he entered the game in the second quarter against Houston Texans as a replacement for an injured Jamie Martin. He ended with a score of achieving 19 of 30 passes for 310 yards along with three touchdowns for a 117.4 quarterback rating. Ultimately he led the Rams from a 24–3 halftime deficit to a 33–27 overtime road victory. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his exploits. His efforts also earned him a place for the next three starts and he became the first Harvard quarterback to start an NFL game.

However, he could not replicate his exploits and in the coming two weeks his team lost a 27–13 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Ultimately he was replaced by Martin after halftime the following week when he struggled in a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 2006, he played only one game and also made a late entry in the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings in relief of Marc Bulger and ran out the clock in the 41–21 road victory. In the seventh-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft he was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals on September 1, 2007. He settled for a one-year tender offer from the Bengals on April 17 in the 2008 free season.

His first Cincinnati Bengals appearance was on September 28, 2008, against the Cleveland Browns, and served as a replacement for an injured quarterback Carson Palmer. He played against the New York Jets on October 12, 2008, and appeared in all the matches for the rest of the season.

Buffalo Bills signed Fitzpatrick for a three-year contract on February 27, 2009, for $7.4 million and his first appearance was against New York Jets on October 18, 2009, again as a replacement for an injured starter Trent Edwards. In the 2010 season head Coach Chan Gailey demoted Fitzpatrick to the backup role and preferred Trent Edwards as the starter for the 2010 season

Buffalo Bills concluded a six-year contract extension on October 28, 2011, with Fitzpatrick for $59 million including a $10 million signing bonus. An injured rib in a game against the Washington Redskins forced him to sit for the rest of the season. He returned with the Bills in 2012 and finished with a score of 3,400 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions to go with 48 carries for 197 yards and a touchdown in 16 games and starts., Tennessee Titans signed Fitzpatrick for a two-year contract On March 18, 2013.
